Online Reputation & Christmas Festivities – Introduction
The Christmas party season is now in full swing. For many, this means attending office parties, while for some it involves catching up with old friends and acquaintances. As people enjoy the festivities, they can very easily let their guard down. By leaving the door wide open to their social media accounts, people can attract the attention of hackers. How can the public safeguard their online reputation over the holiday season? I will outline some easy to implement solutions below.
It is important to use strong passwords for all your social media accounts. Strong passwords should contain a combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols. Equally important, use unique passwords for each of your social media accounts. How should you keep a record of all your passwords? Use Post-It sticky notes? Certainly not. Seriously, consider downloading a password manager app. There are numerous password manager applications available for download. A widely used password management app is Last Pass. Other password management applications include DashLane, RoboForm, and KeePass Password Safe.
Two Factor Authentication
Two factor authentication provides an additional security layer over and above a strong and unique password. Users can enable two factor authentication within the security settings of their social media accounts. These accounts include Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. There are a number of two factor authentication apps available on the App Store and Google Play. These include, Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and Authy. Finally, there is Last Pass Authenticator. Users can also enable two factor authentication for Amazon, Evernote, Google, Microsoft, Office 365, and Pay Pal accounts. How do you add your Facebook account to an authentication app? Firstly, enable two factor authentication in Facebook’s security settings. Secondly, scan a QR code with your smartphone. Finally, enter a unique 6 digit pass code when you log into Facebook.
It is important to have policies in place to safeguard your online reputation. Sounds difficult? Not really. Once you make a start, you will soon be on a roll.
