On March 17th every year Ireland proudly celebrates the history of it’s patron saint, St. Patrick. The story goes that St. Patrick banished snakes from Ireland. Fariones Cloud Services Limited would like to banish some of the misconceptions people have about cloud computing.
People think that cloud computing is only for large multinational organizations, that it is expensive, and their data will be easily compromised. The truth is entirely different.
According to IBM, cloud computing is the delivery of on demand computing resources over the internet on a pay per use basis. A major benefit of cloud computing for small to medium enterprises is scale. It is easy to scale up or down depending on demand. You only pay for what you use.
Cloud Computing Terminology
Acronyms and terminology are often associated with the IT sector. For example what does the private cloud mean? In addition what does the public cloud mean? The terms private cloud and public cloud sound similar. In reality they are completely different.
The private cloud is the provision of computing services over the internet or through a private internal network to specific people. The emphasis is on securing sensitive data in house on the one hand, and benefiting from the scale of cloud computing on the other. The amount of upfront investment required in a private cloud solution is greater than either a hybrid or public cloud implementation.
The hybrid cloud uses a mix of on premises private cloud, and third-party public cloud services. Greater flexibility, and more data deployment options are the main advantages of a hybrid cloud solution. What is the benefit of the hybrid cloud? It allows a company to host sensitive data on-premises. Third party public cloud providers can host less critical data.
Providers of hybrid cloud solutions include Dell EMC, Rackspace, and VMware. A hybrid cloud solution is ideal for companies who want to secure mission critical data, and also benefit from the flexibility of a public cloud solution simultaneously.
The public cloud is a form of cloud computing in which users rely on third-party service providers for resources such as data storage. The service provider also supplies access to online software applications. Examples of public cloud providers are Amazon Web Services, Azure, and Google Cloud.
How does the public cloud compare with the private cloud? Little is required to get started on the public cloud, in terms of upfront investment. The public cloud is an ideal platform for start ups and small to medium sized businesses, due to the relatively low cost of entry.
The cloud computing sector is dynamic and fast moving. I hope you understand a little more about this fascinating topic, as a consequence of reading this blog post.
